The rise of NFC is ongoing. Now that traditional markets such as mobile payment and contactless access are well-established, we see NFC creating new markets on its own and providing technological advancements that fuel a new wave of innovation. This session looks into new use cases for NFC. It will also be the first time NXP presents its next technological evolution for NFC.

NXP has prepared a DroneCode.org compatible Vehicle management unit (VMU) running PX4Pro. The NXPhlite VMU is compatible with the full stack from Dronecode, including internal and external comms, planning and groundstation control. This can be used as the basis to coordinate with a higher level companion system running  LINUX and ROS, or as a standalone vehicle such as a semi-autonomous Drone, Rover, boat or even a lawnmower. NXPhlite features multiple interfaces and includes 100BaseT1 2-wire Ethernet and dual CAN interfaces.

When choosing the NFC device for a new design, the system architect must consider many parameters. Usually a strong focus is put on hardware specific aspects and software aspects are often grossly underestimated. To avoid unpleasant surprises during software implementation phase, software has to be taken into account as well from the beginning. Different NFC IC categories (NFC Frontends, NFC Controller, Connected Tag) have different strengths, depending on the software environment. The way how highly integrated operating systems like Linux are structured brings both new challenges and advantages. This session examines the considerations necessary when designing in NFC in different operating systems or "bare metal" systems. It also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the different device categories in dependence of the designated environment.

This presentation will first highlights some basic training techniques, such as data augmentation, but the primary focus will be on various ways to deploy neural network frameworks and classical machine learning algorithms, and most importantly, utilizing a variety of open source tools and techniques. We will show how these techniques fit in with some real use cases such as object recognition and anomaly detection. The hands-on session portion of the class will allow attendees to take a trained neural network model and deploy it on a i.MX 8M. Attendees will utilize the Linux development environment and implement an end-to-end use case.

Near-field-communication (NFC) is the better, safer way to protect brands while ensuring ease of use for accessories and consumables. With NFC, the device itself can verify the authenticity and can configure operating modes or change settings based on the type of accessory or consumable. With a standard NFC phone, a user can check the originality or trigger a reorder through a simple tap. Based on the brand new NFC Nutshell Kit we will show which options exist on NFC tag and reader side, and how to implement a solution into even space constraint environments.

Secure designs begin with a security model consisting of policies, an understanding of the threat landscape and the methods used to enforce physical and logical security. To protect firmware execution given today’s threat landscape, there must be a policy to only allow execution of authenticated firmware. The methods used to enforce this policy rely on MCU security technology to create a protected boot flow. The boot firmware can contain public key cryptography to authenticate application code. In addition to these components integrated in the end device, there are tools and steps that must be taken in the manufacturing environment using manufacturing hardware for code signing and host programs for provisioning. Join this session to explore the design and implementation of a secure boot by making use of the Arm mbed TLS open source software and protect against firmware attacks.
