The continued growth of processing capabilities and new features introduced with the ARM®v8 based System-on-Chip has made virtualization a realistic option for embedded system developers. With virtualization, system architects can design solutions that reduce the size, weight, power, and cost of legacy systems by consolidating disparate software functions onto a single chip, even if those different software functions require different operating systems or otherwise incompatible software stacks. Virtualization allows architects to partition and isolate software components with different safety, security, or licensing requirements. The virtual machine manager, or hypervisor, is the key piece of software technology enabling virtualization. Open source hypervisor, Xen, supports the ARMv8 processor family.

Emerging Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) require far more compute horsepower, more memory bandwidth, and more high speed IO connectivity than the vehicles in show rooms today. NXP’s highest performance multicore Arm product family (Layerscape) was developed for networking and industrial infrastructure, however their integration and performance per watt has made them attractive in a variety of ‘transportation’ applications, including planes, trains, and now, automobiles. This session will provide an overview of the product family, and its transportation centric use cases.

During this session, we will discuss the new memories supported on the new i.MX8 processor family. For DRAM, this will include DDR4 and Low Power DDR4 (LPDDR4). For non-volatile memory this will include Octal SPI NOR (XccelaTM Flash) which offers up to 400MB/s as well as the latest eMMC 5.X devices that also support high speeds. These devices are offered with Commercial, Industrial or Automotive temperature and quality ratings. This year, we will provide additional information on LPDDR4X (X=lower power I/O) as well as eMMC 5.1 high performance features including command queueing, and several new Cache operations. This session will provide designers with the tools necessary to create state-of-the-art i.MX 8 systems.

The number of ECUs in a car is increasing dramatically on a year by year basis. Modern cars are starting to introduce the concept of centralizing multiple domains (Infotainment, ADAS, etc.) in a single ECU and separate them using technologies like virtualization, multicore or multiple SOCs. Although separated, these entities need to communicate and implementing a software communication solution which is scalable, portable, open and easy to program is key to offering a complete software enablement to our customers. This session will present NXP software solution for communication within a domain and between domains controllers in an ECU.
