EV化が進む理由とは?


近年、世界中で電気自動車 (EV / Electric Vehicle)への移行が急速に進んでいます。これは単なる技術革新ではなく、以下のように様々な要因が複雑に絡み合った大きな社会的変化です。

  • 環境への配慮:地球温暖化対策として、CO2排出量の削減が求められています。
    EVは走行中に排出ガスを出さないため、持続可能な交通手段として注目されています。
  • 政策の後押し:欧州や中国をはじめとした各国でガソリン車の販売禁止に向けた取り組みが行われております。
    また、EV購入促進のための補助金などの政策が導入され、EVの普及が加速しています。
  • 技術の進化:バッテリーの性能向上により、EVの航続距離や充電時間が改善されてきています。
    価格などのハードルが下がり、一般消費者にとっても現実的な選択肢になっています。

このような流れの中で、EVにとってなくてはならないバッテリーの利便性を生かしつつ、いかにして安全に管理するか、その技術がますます重要になっています。

バッテリーとは?


EVの性能、安全性、寿命を左右するのがバッテリーです。
EVのバッテリーは一般的に、数十〜数百のバッテリーセルが接続されて構成されています。
バッテリーセルの化学的な構造は様々ですが、1つあたりのセルの電圧はおおよそ3V程度が一般的です。
組みつけの容易性などの理由から、いくつかのバッテリーセルを束ねてモジュール化することもありますが、この状態のものをバッテリーモジュールと呼びます。
バッテリーモジュールや以下で説明するBMS、及びケーブル類などを一つの筐体に収めたものをバッテリーパックと呼びます。
EVにおけるバッテリーの総電圧は、数百V程度から、ときには1000Vを超えることもあります。


バッテリーを守るBMSとは?


バッテリーを安全かつ効率的に使うための管理システムが、BMS (Battery Management System / バッテリーマネジメントシステム) です。
BMSはバッテリーの状態を常に監視し、異常を検知・制御するためのユニットとなります。これにより、事故を防ぎながら安全性を保ち、性能を最大限に引き出すことが可能になります。
EVのように充電可能で高い電圧のバッテリーに対しては、上記の観点からBMSが常に必要になります。

EVで使用されるもののように高電圧のバッテリーに対するBMSは、一般的に複数のモジュールで構成されており、それぞれがバッテリーに対して重要な役割を果たします。
ここでは、NXPが想定する代表的な3つの構成要素について紹介します。

  1. CMU (Cell Monitoring Unit)

    CMUは、バッテリーモジュールに付属するように配置され、バッテリーセルごとの電圧や温度を測定するユニットです。
    個々のセルの状態をリアルタイムに正確に把握することは、安全性の観点で非常に重要です。以下のような機能を持ちます。

    • 過充電・過放電の防止
    • 全てのセルを効率的に使用するためのセルバランス
    • 異常セルの早期発見

    CMUが正確なデータを提供することで、バッテリー全体の安定性と寿命が向上します。

    CMUの別名:Cell Management Unit, BCC (Battery Cell Controller)

  2. BJB (Battery Junction Box)

    BJBは、バッテリーパック全体の電流及び電圧を測定し、異常時には電流を物理的に遮断する保護機能を持つユニットです。
    高電圧リレーやヒューズ、電流センサなどが組み込まれています。以下のような機能を持ちます。

    • 過電流や短絡の検出
    • 安全な充放電の制御
    • 異常時における確実な電流の遮断

    BJBは万が一のトラブル時にバッテリーや車両全体、ひいては乗員を保護し、安全性を確保します。

    BJBの別名:Battery Pack Monitor (監視機能のみの場合)

  3. BMU (Battery Management Unit)

    BMUは、BMS全体の制御や判断を行う中枢ユニットです。
    CMUやBJBからのデータを統合し、上位ユニットの命令に基づいてバッテリーの状態を解析・制御します。以下のような機能を持ちます。

    • 充電率 (SOC / State Of Charge)の推定
    • 劣化状態 (SOH / State Of Health)の評価
    • 車両ECUや充電器などの他ユニットとの通信
