Embedded system developers often have the impression that adding wireless connectivity to a device is a “black art,” only suitable to be performed by hardware and software wizards. We'll provide an overview of the challenges to overcome when building connected devices. We'll show how GainSpan wizards have made adding wireless connectivity to NXP-based MCUs an easy task suitable for any muggle. We will showcase GainSpan’s easy-to-use Wi-Fi modules and features of the built-in networking stack and services that take the difficulty out of adding wireless connectivity to an embedded design using NXP MCUs by demoing wireless connectivity using the Kinetis SDK, i.MX Application processor platforms and LPCXpresso-based development board. Audience will leave the session with the knowledge and motivation to get started on integrating wireless connectivity into their next NXP-based embedded design.

Industry 4.0, also known as Industrial IoT, is based on cyber physical systems. It will connect objects together inside and outside the factory. This session will discuss the newest technology solutions to access up to the far end remote node via wired or wireless connection. We will go into more detail on IO-Link, a point to point communication, replacing traditional sensor to PLC cabling. IO-Link enables smart access to a sensor or an actuator with data collection and maintenance capabilities. We will also look at disruptive long range wireless communication based on Sigfox technology to connect isolated sensors requiring a long battery life. Watch Video Presentation

A temperature monitoring solution permits logging of transport conditions of each individual drug package at any point in time. Patients and healthcare professionals can confirm the drug quality at the moment of administration. An easy-to-use solution will be presented that helps meet these critical requirements. It comprises a battery, an antenna and a single chip NHS3100 that integrates a sensor, clock, storage and NFC connectivity. Easy-to-use and intuitive, this solution supports wireless communication with a smart phone. It can be used for temperature monitoring of any perishable goods (like flowers, wine, food, resins, ...) as well.

As connected edge devices gain momentum with consumers, the security approaches and assumptions of the past will fail and create new threats and vulnerabilities to consumer safety and privacy. Additionally, the cost for security in mobile phones, tablets, and PCs will present a challenge for applications such as occupant sensors and heart rate monitoring patches. Lastly, the teams of security experts in connected industries do not yet exist at suppliers who are connecting products to the network. Join this session to learn how industries are providing cost effective, highly secure, certified hardware that can hasten the learning cycle for emerging edge node applications, bring solutions for security, drive down costs, and limit the supplier specific required expertise.

Multi-Core Embedded Frameworks are increasingly being used on NXP hardware to host RTOS, Linux and other proprietary operating systems. When it comes to debug, new tools are needed to allow step-by-step time-synchronized debug of individual cores, and their role in the overall system performance. This paper looks at Mentor Embedded Codebench, and the Sourcery Analyzer design debug options.

FIDO Alliance is getting huge traction in the secure authentication world and the member count has surpassed 250 companies. Secure Element based FIDO U2F Authenticators add another security layer to consumer online authentication for cloud services and have been deployed for services like Google, Dropbox, Github, and others. These Authenticators are available in various form factors (Cards, USB keys, Fobs, Wearables and embedded) and support multiple interfaces like USB, NFC and BLE to connect users to critical online services using the FIDO authentication protocol. In addition to FIDO credentials, NXP provides vSE based multi-credential (PKCS#15, EAC, BAC, SAC, Mifare, PIV ) as well as an online services platform including eDoc derived mobile credential management connecting relying parties to enable secure mobile authentication for eGov services. Vehicles need to accurately grasp the world around them - just like the human driver - in order to drive autonomously. Automotive technology aims to fit vehicles with capabilities even beyond the senses of the human driver, allowing to make the most intelligent decisions in real time. The information that vehicle sensors collect must not only be real time and accurate but also be secure against hacking attacks so that we can trust them with our lives. Reliable ADAS and appropriate security measures are a key ingredient in self-driving cars. Vehicle-to-X technology, extends the visibility beyond the sight of drivers to "see" around corners and through obstacles. External sensor information and internal data from the car networks are vital to help to eliminate the 1.3 million road accidents happening on global roads each year.

A modern car is more than just transport, it provides comfortable heating and cooling, navigation systems, entertainment systems, and a lot of data about the car's health and performance. Including how well you are conserving fuel or when to seek service. All of this is a challenge to present to the driver and passengers, without distraction to driving, under all conditions from bright daylight to the dark of night, in any temperature. We talk about both Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) component solutions that keep your dashboard simple, readable, and helpful. Watch Video Presentation

Resonant AC/DC supplies have superior efficiency at high power output. The TEA1916 is a digital controller simplifying the complexity of resonant LLC designs and providing easy tuning. It succeeds the very popular TEA1716 used in many resonant Switch Mode Power Supplies for e.g. PC's & TV's, but the TEA1916 is actually very suitable for any power supply > 75W, e.g. medical, industrial and server power supplies. The TEA1916 uses a new digital cycle-by-cycle architecture (Vcap control) to enable a new type of operation at low power loads. This increases the efficiency at low output power, using an accurately controlled burst mode operation. The TEA1916 also achieves very low power consumption in standby or off state; a key performance parameter to differentiate from competition. To obtain the highest efficiency the TEA1916 works excellent together with NXP's TEA1995 Synchronous Rectifier.
