DDR3, DDR3L, DDR4 have large, wide busses that require management on the PCB routing to optimize their speed of operation. Data busses will have characteristics related to on-die termination and driver strengths for both reads and writes (bidirectional). Address-Command-Control busses will be use the fly-by or serial routing and work unidirectionally. Both require careful selection of driver and receiver characteristics, as well as optimization of the PCB routing and design of the traces on the PCB. This talk will review the driver, receiver, and common PCB characteristics and show how simulation with IBIS models are used to weigh the trade-offs for the DDR bus design. Watch Video Presentation

V2X technology has the potential to drastically reduce road accidents and improve the traffic flow by fusing in-car sensor data with data obtained from other road users and from the surrounding infrastructure - visibly or unvisbily and far beyond the driver's line of sight. Vehicle to cloud data communication provides a pathway for anonymous data collection and dissemination. When the true potential for V2X is realized and it becomes a true part of the vehicle safety system it is vital that the authenticity and security of data are guaranteed. In addition, the vehicle control units that coordinate active stability systems must be protected against external influences that might subvert the mechanisms design. This presentation will explore the various security countermeasures needed to make V2X a safe and secure technology for the future. Watch Video Presentation

Today’s Infotainment systems are an important part of the driving experience. Complexity of these systems is increasing yet OEM development schedules are being compressed to bring consumers the latest in connectivity, entertainment, and security, at the lowest possible cost. A group of industry experts will discuss: How to approach platform development (customer specific vs market segment). The winning architecture at the system and IC level (distributed vs integrated solutions)? Managing quickly changing technologies such as displays, connectivity, security? How to continue development of increasingly complex software systems. Will the Infotainment system become a cockpit electronics module? How to manage mixing infotainment and safety-related functions like cluster indicators and “convenience” ADAS features?

The I2C bus has expanded from its humble beginnings in 1980s home electronics to both small and large scale systems in the modern world. Applications range from Smartphones to Server farms, and while they're true to the original simple signaling protocol other I2C bus components are needed to expand, adapt or buffer those signals. We take an in depth technical look at the simple Bus Buffer. Often needed, and seldom understood. Watch Video Presentation

NXP’s latest generation of passive UHF RFID, called UCODE® DNA, can be used in Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) systems that make it easier to identify – and collect from – drivers of vehicles that aren’t properly registered. In an AVI system for vehicle registration, readers can be installed above, below, or to the side of the road. They can also be embedded in a handheld device, for use by government personnel. The tag, attached to the vehicle, uses the energy produced by the reader’s RF field, so there’s no need for a battery and the tag has a very long lifespan. Cryptography-based security minimizes errors and practically eliminates fraud. Vehicle owners (and fee collectors) can be confident that the right person is being billed, since readings are both highly accurate and highly secure.

About a decade ago, NXP introduced its first generation Near Field Magnetic Induction (NFMI) radio, to help connecting hearing impaired persons with the digital world. Today, besides medical applications, NFMI is also being used in consumer devices to reduce power consumption and not be affected by body tissue absorption. NXP NFMI allows for hearable and wearable devices that can fit inside an ear canal or be worn on the body. Power levels are low enough to run for a week on a single ZnAir battery. Applications include truly wireless earbuds, implantable electronics, body area networks, under water communication devices, and many other low power.

Networking devices use high-speed differential signaling that can exceed 10 Gbps. Circuit design for the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) elements in the high speed channel have capabilities of offset signal losses in the PCB and system. This session will review the high-speed signal channel and its characteristics and illustrate how the TX and RX circuits in general are used to offset signal losses. It will also show key characteristics of the channels that are needed to allow these TX and RX circuits to work effectively. This session will also address maximum length of the PCB channel, PCB-specific structures that need to be optimized and the usage of the IBIS-AMI models for 5-10 Gbps operation. Examples of channels from PCB designs at NXP will also be included. Watch Video Presentation
