NXP SAF SquareCheck vs BIST Manager

Dear NXP safety experts, what is the difference between NXP SAF Square Check vs NXP SAF BIST manager? Both seem to perform tests, to detect latent failures in safety mechanism which detect random HW failures.

Hi Emmanuel,

SquareCheck tests the H/W safety mechanisms whereas BIST (LBIST and MBIST) tests the entire logic of the chip which may include the H/W safety mechanism as well.

Q2. Can you confirm if both the NXP SAF SquareCheck & BIST Manager are necessary (or recommended) for using S32G2 in ASILB application?

A1. A detailed list of H/W modules covered under SCheck can be found in Table 4. S32G Test Targets Description under section 2.2.1 in S32G2 SAF SquareCheck User Manual Rev. 7 — 25 June 2021. 

A detailed list of H/W modules covered under Chapter 72 Self-Test Control Unit (STCU2) section 72.1.3 and 72.1.4 of S32G2 Reference Manual, Rev. 4, October, 2021

Q2. Can you confirm if both the NXP SAF SquareCheck & BIST Manager are necessary (or recommended) for using S32G2 in ASILB application?

A.2) It is recommended to run SquareCheck and BIST for ASIL B application. Run SquareCheck on safety mechanism and BIST on rest of the logic. The BIST can additionally be run on safety mechanism if there is low DC achieved through corresponding SquareCheck element.
