Companies and consumers alike are excited about the opportunities offered by the IoT and the Smart Home. Concerns on user-friendliness and security are however holding potential customers back: how can I install it? , what if my neighbor hacks into my network? NFC technology addresses these cost, ease of use and security concerns by offering short distance out-of-band pairing capabilities that reduce the complex commissioning system to a simple 'tap'. And with NXP's connected NFC tag technology, IoT nodes of all sizes do not even need to be powered. Watch Video Presentation

Advancing technology has brought down the cost of 24 GHz radar system significantly bringing a whole range of new applications into reach. Historically radar was a pure military and industrial application due to high application costs. With the latest generation of NXP BiCMOS technology this has changed. A 24 GHz radar frontend can now be fully integrated into a single IC bringing the costs and power dissipation down to consumer levels. This opens up a whole range of applications which were previously not possible. This lecture will show the possibilities of radar in different applications such as presence detection and consumer drone collision avoidance. A live demonstration based on first test chips in combination with ARM processors will be given.

By adding NFC to a door lock, the same smartcard technology that protects some of the world’s most valuable objects can now be brought to everyday places like homes, apartment buildings, and hotels. An NFC-enabled smartphone can be used to configure the lock, so homeowners can grant temporary access to a specific person or group. This hands-on session demonstrates how the latest NFC controller solution with customizable firmware, the PN7462, can be used for access applications. For the demonstration the PN7462 development kit will be used together with the software example to develop a door access application.

Embedded system developers often have the impression that adding wireless connectivity to a device is a “black art,” only suitable to be performed by hardware and software wizards. We'll provide an overview of the challenges to overcome when building connected devices. We'll show how GainSpan wizards have made adding wireless connectivity to NXP-based MCUs an easy task suitable for any muggle. We will showcase GainSpan’s easy-to-use Wi-Fi modules and features of the built-in networking stack and services that take the difficulty out of adding wireless connectivity to an embedded design using NXP MCUs by demoing wireless connectivity using the Kinetis SDK, i.MX Application processor platforms and LPCXpresso-based development board. Audience will leave the session with the knowledge and motivation to get started on integrating wireless connectivity into their next NXP-based embedded design.

This session offers deep understanding of buck regulator performance and its reliability aspect. Buck regulator is the most widely used topology. Once the system power need is calculated, identifying the right power management chip is critical to a project's success. Session attendees should be able to identify and review critical DC-DC converter specifications and choose the best power solution based on their need. Calculating/selecting the passives and discrete around the buck regulator to create a robust design is discussed. Finally, measurement of key parameters to ensure the thermal, and loop stability is shared.
