No, by “last available version” I thought newest maskset revision. Sorry for confusing statement.
New MCU could contain some number bugs in design (see errata list). New revision typically fixes one or more of these bugs. New revision will have higher first number in maskset. For example 1M48H is typically newer than 0M48H and it typically contains less bugs.
Additionally most of automotive parts are produced at two different factories (for prevention against any outage). Maskset name differs between factories even when both MCUs share the same design.
When you buy part with Mask-independent part number, you cannot choose which of masksets (1M48H, 0M48H or maskset from second factory) will be delivered.
For more confusing, there may exist also part numbers with firmware revisions like A, B,…
