What's the difference between driver NAME and NAME_LDD?

Some components both a high-level driver (eg ExtInt) and a low-level driver (eg ExtInt_LDD)--is there something that describes the differences and when each should be used?  The components that have both that I've looked at seem to have similar functionality and I didn't find anything in the MQX Lite User Guide or Reference Manual that describes this.
