this might sound very stupid, but is there any way to debug a general c program using lpcxpresso? Like just test out "hello world" program without using a lpc-link or any jtag to any microcontroller. Total noob here.

I think you are looking for a simulator. LPCXpresso is no simulator, it's debugging real hardware :)
