USBSPYDER08 Windows Vista Questions

hi... 1st post

I bought a USBSPYDER08 to do some quick (more important CHEAP) microcontroller applications.  The computer near where this takes place runs Windows Vista.  CodeWarrior version 5.1 (?) that came on the CD with the part will not load.

If I download CW_MCU_V6_1_SE will it work with the USBSPYDER08 ?  Is that the same (but newer and compatable) development system that came with the USBSPYDER08 ?  Will I be able to obtain the (free) special edition license for this?

I am clueless as to how USB works.  On the CD there is a program called usbspyder08_setup.exe from SofTek Microsystems.  Is this what puts the app on the PC to run the USB to CodeWarrior interface?  Will it work with VIsta.  Do I run that after I install code warrior?

The USBSPYDER08 came populated with a MC9S08QG4CE.  If I read the data sheet correctly this part does not have a debug module (DBG).  Is that going to cause me additional problems.

Sorry about so many questions.  Perhaps in my quest to get the most bang for the buck I made a poor choice.

Thanks

Welcome :-)

CW 5.1 does not support Vista, basically was released before Vista. Is that what you mean with "will not load"? With Vista, use CW for MCU 6.1.

Yes, CW for MCU's 6.1 works with the spyder. The special license is automatically installed, I think (not 100% sure, just 90%).

I guess you can run it, not sure if it does contain additional examples and stuff for the spyder.

As far as I remember, with HC08 V5.1 you had to install that in order to debug with the spyder. With 6.1, just installing 6.1 is enough to get you going. Create a new project for the SofTec connection.

The USBSPYDER08 came populated with a MC9S08QG4CE.  If I read the data sheet correctly this part does not have a debug module (DBG).  Is that going to cause me additional problems.

As far as I know the GQ4 has a debug module. So no. Even without a debug modul (I don't think so), the S08 still has a single HW breakpoint.

Sorry about so many questions.  Perhaps in my quest to get the most bang for the buck I made a poor choice.

I like the spyder because its so small to carry around. But I'm usually not developing a target application, more try things with the development tools.

Thanks

Thanks.  It worked like a charm.

I haven't written 4k of code yet but if the file license.dat contains this;

#######################################################

# ( 843): HC08 V6.0 Special Edition

#######################################################

Does that mean the special edition features are enabled?

yes. And ignore the 0, in 6.0. The license works for 6.1 too.

Excuse me, I use Vista too but I have another generic question on the Spyder key: can I use it to debug application based on other 8bits MCUs, let's say, the GZxx?
Thank you in advance.
