Using a Chip Antenna & AN2731

Hello All -

not to dig [this] post from out of the grave... but  I am also intrested in using a Chip Antenna for an ultra small footprint Zigbee PCB.  I have looked into the AN2731 and frankly there is not much content in that note in re: Chip Antenas.  Nothing speaks to the support ICs that are required to make a chip antenna work or how to tune it nor is there a simple example schematic.  I am just getting into Antenna Theory and I would like some direction before I lay a board out and send it to fab.

Thanks

Hello,

The chip antenna interface requirements will be dictated by the manufacturer of the specific device that you intend using - you won't necessarily be able to generalise.

However, it is possible that some devices would be intended to interface with an unbalanced source matched to nominal 50 ohm.  In these cases, it is possible that a matching network will be required, similar to that needed for a resonant "whip" antenna.  No additional "support ICs" should be necessary - matching networks are usually passive.

Regards,
Mac
