Design Revision History
Prior to 2011, construction of the track varied. In Mexico for example the track was constructed of 1/2" laminated MDF.
This proved to be a very rigid track, but had two major drawbacks. First, the weight of the track made shipping very expensive. Second, the track laminate would often separate from the MDF substrate. The second option used in Asia and India, is a printed format typically using foam poster or vinyl banner materials, (like the banners one would see on exterior signage). Each option has pros and cons as illustrated below.
|MDF||Foam Board||ABS Plastic||Vinyl Banner|
|Easy to Build||Heavy||Cheap||Poor Durability||Lightweight|
About the Same Price as Foam Board
|Readily Available Materials||De-laminates||Lightweight||Limited Shaping||Extremely Durable||Wrinkles|
In 2011, Freescale contracted Blue Genie Art Industries to create the future Freescale Cup Track. The track is constructed entirely from 1/8" ABS plastic and split into modular design pieces. The ABS plastic is durable, lightweight, can be packed flat and the modular design of the track allows the major pieces to be reused for several years.
