Old Ubuntu version recommended for LTIB.

We are just getting started trying to get a development environment setup for a SABRE SDB card.  I've downloaded what I think is the most recent supported documents, source code, and SDK from the Freescale site (L3.0.35_4.1.0).  The document ...\doc\mx6\Setting_Up_LTIB_host.pdf says that we should setup LTIB on Ubuntu 9.04.  That version of Ubuntu hasn't been supported since 2010.  Should we really be starting with such an old version of Ubuntu as the host?  That will cause problems with our IT staff since it cannot be patched anymore.  Has anyone used a more recent LTS version of Ubuntu with the LTIB?  That is my main question. However, I've also read these disturbing threads (https://community.freescale.com/thread/311412, https://community.freescale.com/message/314093).  These threads make the waters even more murky for us in that we do not know if we should be starting with the LTIB tool.  It seems to be the tool recommended by Freescale, but many people in the community are convincingly arguing against LTIB and recommending Yocto (or Linaro).  Any further recommendations beyond what is already in these threads would be helpful.

I understand your confusion. We are moving toward Yocto, and Yocto supports most distributions/versions, so you can try the latest Ubuntu. In case you want to use LTIB, I commonly use Ubuntu 12.04, recent BSPs work without any patch.

Thank you for the quick helpful response.  And sorry to bother you again with a follow up question: how much trouble we might run into if we tried to use LTIB on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation release 6.4?  It would make it much more easy on us if we used RHEL because that is automatically approved by our IT department.  Would moving from Ubuntu to RHEL be something you would discourage or should it be pretty easy?

Hi Brad,

I have not seen any post regarding LTIB running on RHE. Please try it and let us know. RHE is a pretty robust distribution, just make sure you install the needed packages before running the Linux builder.
