IPU video input

Is the i.MX53 capable of receiving video on the DISP0_DATx bus (on the QSB expansion header) or is it output only?  I'm trying to do this:

   HDMI input -> T.I. TFP401a (24-bit RGB) -> i.MX53 IPU/VPU

The CSI (Camera Sensor Interface) is 20-bit only.

The source is actually DVI, but HDMI connectors are smaller and I don't need audio.

So there's no way to get 24-bit RGB into the i.MX53?  Could you recommend a more appropriate processor for doing this that has similar horsepower?

The DISP0_DATx are the output to displays, so you won't be able to use them for input. Since you want to go from HDMI to the i.MX53, I'm not sure that TI part is really appropriate, since it looks like it's a DVI input (HDMI is DVI video plus audio in it).

Another part to look at is the Analog Devices ADV7441A. This part looks like it can take HDMI and convert it to a bt.656 format. Then you could feed the bt.656 to the i.MX53's CSI.
