How to configure flexcan mailbox ?

I am trying to configure the mailbox settings in flexcan on a i.MX 6Ultra Lite SoC. I am new to this and i am not sure from where to start.
I came to understand that mailbox can be configured from the kernel layer and not necessarily from the application layer.  I am using a kernel version 4.9, but i am not sure what changes to flexcan.c can help me configure the mailboxes. Any sample code or reference to some documents will be appreciated.
