Smartcard Card Storage Best Practices

We have a large customer that has a question regarding best practices for long-term storage of the smart cards utilized for their HSMs. They have noticed that the cards stored within their existing safe have significant corrosion on the contacts, and indeed even a recently acquired set has notable corrosion fresh out of the package (though the package sat unopened for a period of a few months). They are asking what if anything can they do to mitigate the corrosion they've already experienced, and what would the best practice be to protect these cards (and/or new cards) against further corrosion?

I am sorry, but maybe you have to check with the card makers on this topic, we are just IC supplier indeed.
