Hi,
Our company uses MC9S12DP512CPVE in one product assembly.
There is currently a shortage in the market, the prices are crazy and the lead time is about a year (official distributors).
Is there particular reason of this shortage and is there any chance for the situation to normalize soon?
Thank you in advance.
Hi @fantoms
I have a few clients dealing with the same issues. Is the requirement for the MC9S12DP512CPVE components still active?
I recently worked with a medical device OEM that has excess stock. Let me know if I can help or send me an email alessandro@directics.com
Best,
Hello Lama,
Thank you very much for the market overview.
I am new in electronics/chip purchasing and that's why the information was very helpful for me.
Hi,
The device is an older type with less priority of production - depends on market and business priorities. Moreover, this is an automotive device and a lot of big players made large orders in past. There are not many chip manufacturers around the world. Usually, companies make design but production is realized in specialized factories. Recently I have heard that manufacturer has to reinvest 80% of profit so manufacturing is a decision of company owners whether it is worth to go this way or use specialized producers.
It looks like the situation is stabilizing and delivery times are getting shorter, but no one can make predictions in this direction.
Generally.....
The largest producer of chips in the world is the Taiwanese company Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC), which is currently the most valuable company in Asia based on market capitalization. TSMC's technology processes are so advanced that the company produces around 92% of the world's most complex chips.
Several factors have contributed to the current shortage of chips. The most significant of these include increased demand for consumer electronics due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the growing demand for chips is also supported by continuing interest in cloud services and cryptocurrency mining. The situation was complicated by the COVID closures.
Manufacturers were unable to respond to the significantly higher demand, and the situation was further complicated by the closures imposed due to the pandemic and sometimes a shortage of employees if some of them had to stay in quarantine due to COVID infection. The shortage of chips has severely disrupted the plans of key economic sectors.
The global shortage of chips has probably had the greatest impact on the automotive industry, where these semiconductor components are used in the onboard electronics, forcing manufacturers worldwide to reduce production. Automakers around the world have not been able to complete vehicles on time since last year, delivery deadlines have been significantly extended. The waiting time for someone interested in a new car can be more than a year from ordering the car to production.
Best regards,
Ladislav
