any idea why this is happening, it has worked for me in the past

I can clone git://git.freescale.com/ppc/sdk/linux.git from the internal, however it has not been updated to the latest.

Please check whether you could access http://sw-stash.freescale.net/projects/SDK/repos/linux-sdk2.0/browse from the external, please click "Actions" on the left to clone the latest source code. We all use this.
