Firstly, according to your description, I don't consider that the pre-programmed demo had been broken, so I'd like to suggest you click the reset button, then follow the Getting Started with Alexa Voice Service to connect the wifi again.
Also, NXP has provided the SDK library which contains a variety of demos for a developer for further testing, and you give a try.
