Since the early 1920’s, the source of microwave power generation has traditionally been vacuum tubes and magnetrons. Some high power RF applications today still rely on vacuum tube technology, even though there has been a multitude of advances in solid state RF power generation. This class will cover the technological advantages of solid state including dynamic range control, spectral purity, manufacturing economies of scale and product longevity.

White box switches are network switches that are sold independent of the software that will run on them. Open Network Linux (ONL) is used as the basis for the "network operating systems" that run on the switches. Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) is used to create the software used to install the networking operation system onto the switch. This presentation highlights NXP's involvement in ONL/ONIE on the QorIQ P2041 and QorIQ T2080 platforms as well as the roadmap for LS2085. This session will expand on NXP's approach to ONL/ONIE and the white box market. Watch Video Presentation

This technical session provides an overview of the i.MX 6UltraLite MMDC (DDR Controller), the DDR tools used for DDR testing and board bring-up, and hardware considerations for DDR board designs. Attendees should be familiar with the MMDC from previous i.MX 6 series processors, specifically the i.MX 6SoloX. The session covers the differences in the MMDC between the i.MX 6UltraLite and its predecessor, the i.MX 6SoloX applications processor. The first half covers the tool offerings used to assist the user with bringing-up and testing a new DDR interface: i.MX 6UltraLite DRAM Register Programming Aid tool and the DDR Stress Test. The second half of the session covers hardware considerations board designers should follow for DDR board designs.

Any payment solution, whether it’s an mobile Point-of-Sales (mPOS), laptop, tablet, wearable, or embedded module, needs to be secure, scalable, and easily certified for interoperability. This session explains general considerations for contactless POS terminal designs adressing the most common challenges like the NFC antenna size and position as well as EMVCo L1 analog and digital compliancy. In addition, it will be explained how the latest NFC controller PN5180 is supporting PCI requirements. This session will provide an overview of NXP's products suitable for payment applications as well as selection criteria dependent on the physical terminal design and development targets. Participants will be able to reduce the design risk and speed up their tiem to market by avoiding typical roadblocks during the development of NFC-enabled payment terminals.

The two big topics in automotive electronics development in the last five years has been functional safety and security. Sometimes these terms are used synonymously, sometimes completely separately. This thought provoking presentation will explore where the two topics overlap, where they result in contradictory requirements, and indeed whether they are complementary. Watch Video Presentation

Automotive applications based on modern processor technology require more complex hardware design than traditional microcontroller solutions: volatile and non-volatile memories are provided external to the device and multiple power supplies are required. This session provides a guide to developing a hardware platform using the S32V234 processor as an example. Topics covered include: power supply design considerations, memory layout and technology, camera and display connectivity, fast interface technology and serial bus physical interfaces. Though cryptographic algorithms like AES are crypto-analytically secure, real implementations must at least be tested against logical attacks such as API misuse. Smart cards and similar devices also face fault and side channel attacks. Such attacks exploit physical effects to manipulate the device or learn about secret information. As these attacks are very critical, customers in the smart card industry ask for third party evaluation (e.g. Common Criteria or EMVCo) to confirm high assurance levels. If passed, a certificate is issued by a trusted party. With the rise of the IoT, physical attacks and respective third-party witnessing of resistance might soon be relevant there as well. Advancing technology has brought down the cost of 24 GHz radar system significantly bringing a whole range of new applications into reach. Historically radar was a pure military and industrial application due to high application costs. With the latest generation of NXP BiCMOS technology this has changed. A 24 GHz radar frontend can now be fully integrated into a single IC bringing the costs and power dissipation down to consumer levels. This opens up a whole range of applications which were previously not possible. This lecture will show the possibilities of radar in different applications such as presence detection and consumer drone collision avoidance. A live demonstration based on first test chips in combination with ARM processors will be given.
