Implementing smart lock with PN7161 for Apple Wallet

Hello NXP Community,

We're working with a lock manufacturer to develop a smart lock that can be unlocked via smartphone wallet applications (both iOS and Android). Our current plan centers around using the NXP PN7161 NFC controller, which has "Enhanced Contactless Polling" (ECP) by Apple.

We're in the early exploratory phase and trying to understand the full stack of technology requirements, certifications needed, and associated costs before making final design decisions.

For the Apple integration, the workflow isn't so clear to us, and we have the following questions:

  • Does using the PN7161 still require MFi certification?
  • Do we need to join Apple's VAS program separately?
  • Are there other certificates/programs that we must join?
  • What are the associated costs? (type of costs, recurring, one time, ...)

Any guidance, documentation links, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Hello @Geiger8759

Hope you are doing well.

It is necessary to get approval from Apple for using PN7161 in the ECP application.ECP software, information and support can only be provided through a NXP FAE. You could also contact your local Distributor for further support on this inquiry.

For more information, please refer to PN7160 frequently asked questions, Section 13.

Regards,
Eduardo.
