I thought I might need something like this. What is its status ? Are there any newer similar products ?

Hello Randy,
PCA9698 is still active in production, but the HVQFN56 version (PCA9698BS) is being discontinued. The TSSOP56 version (PCA9698DGG) remains fully active and supported and is the recommended choice for new designs. There is no newer NXP device that offers the same 40‑bit GPIO count and current capability in a single chip, so PCA9698DGG is still the most appropriate solution if that functionality is required.
