PN7220 with one HOST to use EMVCo polling and NFC Forum polling

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to use a host SoC with the PN7220 to support both EMVCo and NFC Forum polling. I'm uncertain about whether I should use the I2C, SPI interfaces, or both to achieve this functionality.

Is SPI necessary for reading MasterCard/Visa cards compliant with EMVCo standards?

While I don't need a PCI certification, I do need to accept payments via MasterCard/Visa cards as a Virtual POS. Can I use just the I2C interface for both EMVCo and NFC operations?

Alternatively, should I use separate interfaces, with SPI for EMVCo polling and I2C for NFC, considering I have only one Android-running SoC in my hardware?

Could you please advise on the best way to connect the PN7220 to an Android-based host? Should I dynamically switch the MODE pin to support both EMVCo and NFC Forum? Do I need to use both SPI and I2C interfaces?

Regarding the use of PN7220 to support EMVCo and NFC Forum technologies, and considering you only have one Android Main Host in your setup, you may use only the PN7220 HIF1 enabling I2C communication, given that in Single Host Mode the PN7220 supports the use of both technologies, which are selected just by toggling the Mode_Switch_GPI. 

Please refer to section 4 of the PN722X NFC controller User Manual to get a deeper understanding on the communication flow for Single Host Mode, and consider taking a look at Table 8. PN722X GPI usage on the same document to learn about signal handling for the Mode_Switch_GPI.
