NXP MBTK example lpuart_hello_world_S32K14x fails with model error in PIL build

When I build this example in MATLAB/Simulink 2020a in PIL mode, it builds and deploys successfully, but fails execution with a run error:

Array indices must be positive integers or logical values.

Component:Simulink | Category:Model error

Trying to run it in SIL mode produces all sorts of UART-related errors and doesn't seem relevant, except that I don't get this particular model error.

I've poked around at the model but am new enough to this whole process that I don't see how to determine where it is failing. All the blocks in the model are outlined in red, which isn't very helpful. And anyway, I suspect that the model error report is a side effect of the real problem. Has anybody seen this and how do I fix it?
