Not familiar with Eclipse, how does one view the examples provided with LPCXpresso?

From the Quickstart panel, use Import projects
Under Project archives, press Browse
Browse to the Examples/NXP/LPC1000/LPC1300 (or whatever is your chip)
select one of the .zip files
and finish.

with the downloaded example code(\redstate\...) and again code from the web. For both zip files I get the message "no projects are found to import"

did you read the getting started guide? it is explained in there.
