I know Free edition restricts programming and debugging of applicati on greater Ethan 256.
It's not clear to me where si exactly the limitation.

For exampla: LPCXpresso Free Edition and LPCLink devboard. If I'll be able to configure standard Eckipse or Code::Blocks and LPCLink as a standard GDB server. Will the restricion disappear? In this case the IDE isn't LPCXpresso so I could immagine the limitation doesn't apply, but I use the debugger driver that comes with LPCXpresso so I don't know.

Even in that thread, it's not clear if the memory size restriction of LPCXpresso Free Edition would be present with J-Link probe or not.

I understand. So put the question in the opposite way.

If I buy a J-Link debugger/programmer probe from Segger, could I use it with LPCXpresso Free Edition to program and debug applications without any restrictions on code size?

The limitation is implemented in the debugger. You can generate an application of any size, but the debugger will not debug an image large than 256k
