What does bit 0 (IRC oscillator output) actually do, that makes it different from bit 1 (IRC oscillator)?

I mistakenly assumed that it was for the CLKOUT pin, and as I wasn't using the CLKOUT pin I switched it off, and it really didn't like being switched off!

Thanks. That makes a bit more sense of it, and explains why it all goes horribly wrong if I disable IRCOUT when I'm using the oscillator.
Probably, it's best if I don't start to wonder why anyone would want to enable or disable one without the other.

I would say
0 IRCOUT_PD IRC oscillator output power-down ===== disables the output amplifier after the oscillator stage
1 IRC_PD IRC oscillator power-down ===== disables the supply of the internal oscillator

Unfortunately, I have just found that NXP restricts access to support to PC users and excludes those with Macs. The registration form doesn't work in Safari.
I thought I'd contact the webmaster to tell him, but first I have to register!

2. The LPC11xx MCU (hence this section of the forum) but the LPC8xx, LPC13xx and LPC15xx are the same.
