Roadmap: Plan for current NXP Kinetis and LPC lines

1. What is NXP future plan on the Kinetis line? We are actively using Kinetis K20's and want to see if we need to stay or start looking for another NXP line.

2. I noticed the LPC line which is interesting (such as the LPC540XX), but what could be the design criteria for choosing LPC vs Kinetis?

3. For roadmap discussions, will the new NXP support more the Kinetis or the LPC line?  What is the future of the Kinetis line?

I know that my 3 questions are actually related to each other.  Thanks in advance.

Hi Jonathan,

1.Currently, there is no future plan on most of Kinetis product line. Only W series will have new product this year. But this absolutely doesn't mean that Kinetis will not develop anymore. Kinetis family longevity is 15 year. We now pay more attaintion on software support. For example, the iteration of SDK is very rapid. And we add more and more IoT examples and middleware in it. K20 has different version, from 50MHz to 120MHz. If you have requirement on performance, you can migrate to high speed version.
2. LPC54000 family is our new product line. There will be many new products in this family appearing in these years. But the criteria of choosing is your requirement. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you dont know which to choose.
3. As I have say, Kinetis and LPC is same important to NXP. We are the first player in MCU market. We'll keep on going in both of the product line.

jing

Thanks Jing for the good responses. Here are some follow-up questions or notes.

1. We use K22/K24/K26 and It is good that Kinetis will be supported for 15yrs. We had seen changes in software development from last year, ex. change KDS to mcuXpresso; now, we need to mitigate hardware risk for future products.

2a. I look into the LPC540 series, what do you think is its design win over Kinetis K20 (let's say K24)? I notice it has better feature set (more UART, more DMA, higher speed, etc.) but no LPC540 can go up to 2MB internal Flash. We are looking for more internal flash if possible.

2b. Is the LPC540 series trend to use external  Flash over QSPI?  I believe you send out the benchmark on a separate thread.

Sincerely,

Jonathan
