The Kinetis bootloader is a configurable flash programming utility that operates over a serial connection on Kinetis MCUs. In this session, you will learn about the bootloader's major features and most recent updates, followed by a hands-on class where we'll discuss all of the configurations complete with lab examples covering how to talk, configure and use the Kinetis bootloader. We will cover all of the protocols and have lab examples for communication to the Kinetis bootloader using UART, USB HID. Attendees will learn to implement a UART-only bootloader with small code footprint. Attendees will leave the class with all the information to re-create the labs.

The D-Bug12XZ firmware combined with the Freescale LFBDMPGMR BDM programmer hardware provides a powerful low-level debugging environment for S12 and S12X MagniV devices. There are times when Electronic Control Modules (ECM) in a car will become inoperative or unresponsive to normal communication channels such as CAN or LIN. The Background Debug Module (BDM) on these devices combined with the D-Bug12XZ  debugger provides the ability to reliably ‘hot-connect’ to the S12 and S12X MagniV devices without resetting or disturbing the running target. Once BDM communications is established with the target, the MCU’s I/O and memory resources can be uploaded for analysis. This session will teach the features and use of these tools to ‘hot connect’ to an unresponsive target MCU with the goal of determining the possible cause of the software and/or hardware failure.

PROFIBUS, CAN and RS232 are extensively used in communications networks in factories, buildings, transport infrastructures and monitoring/control equipment in our cities. Ethernet offers higher bandwidth and, in many cases, lowers cost--especially when deployed in daisy-chain topology. Technologies such as EtherCAT, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP are testament to this. In this session, we will explore how QorIQ processor families can help equipment manufacturers span this landscape using a QUICC Engine (QE) controller for UART/Ethernet-based protocol implementation, a Enhanced Triple Speed Ethernet Controller (eTSEC) for intelligent Ethernet classification and 2-port switching, and an eight-port gigabit Ethernet switch for wire-rate switching. Reference design software and hardware files will be available to help you start your own PROFIBUS and PROFINET designs.

Many people involved in the electronics industry need a basic knowledge of semiconductor components in order to understand issues like manufacturing cycle time, semiconductor fab consolidation and failure analysis results. This session is geared towards a non-technical audience and gives a high-level overview of semiconductor devices and how they are made. The lecture begins with a brief overview of how semiconductor devices work. The bulk of the presentation describes the generic manufacturing flow for semiconductor devices with an emphasis on the complexity of the equipment/facilities used and the process time required.

As the IoT gains momentum, the growth in the number of nodes connected to the internet poses a number of security challenges. The sheer number of devices establishing new connections to the cloud places a severe computational load on web servers. At the other end of the network, existing internet authentication algorithms are too heavy for small, battery powered sensor nodes to process. Further, more personal data will be captured and must be protected from cyber-attacks. This session will propose solutions to mitigate these challenges, both in the cloud and in the edge nodes.

The Kinetis W series offers wireless functionality by integrating class-leading sub-1 GHz and 2.4 GHz RF transceivers. For high accuracy electricity metering and test and measurement applications Kinetis M introduces 24-bit sigma delta ADC and low noise amplifiers on-chip.
