Introducing a temperature dependent current limit for motor drivers. This thermal management scheme ensures high efficient operation by reducing switching losses when motor is experiencing heavy loads or binding. In the presentation we will discuss factors determining power dissipation in a motor driver integrated circuit examining dynamic and steady state operation and their effect on junction temperature. We will review how to calculate an estimate of power dissipation using the information provided in a typical motor driver data sheet. With an understanding how power is dissipated in a motor driver, we will introduce a new system using temperature dependent current limit that will protect both the driver and the motor. Connected and smart devices have been part of many visions for the last decade, but we are closer to the tipping point now than ever before. Part of this tipping point is related to enabling the explosion in the wearables market. In this session, we will define the wearables market, identify the key challenges and needs related to this market and discuss technologies that will spur innovation and growth. We'll walk through the new Wearables Reference Platform (WaRP) board which incorporates a hybrid architecture with an i.MX application processor and a Kinetis MCU to provide flexibility and scalability. WaRP also incorporates sensor and wireless technologies from Freescale for further capabilities. Automotive integrated circuits are requiring high temperature and high voltage application environments. High temperature and high voltage impose severe constraints on the design of IC interconnect and the materials used in the assembly and packaging processes. The use of fine gauge copper wire bonding has been growing very rapidly in consumer, portable, and industrial electronics. Freescale has made significant inroads in introducing and accelerating the adoption of fine gauge copper wire in the high reliability automotive space. The molding compounds were studied and reformulated to accommodate high voltage up to 65V. This presentation will discuss key learnings in copper wire bonding process and molding compound formulation development, and present an exciting update on Freescale strategy on gold to copper wire conversion.

This session provides an overview of the new Kinetis MCU auto product family, including KEA and KFA series MCUs. The Kinetis MCU auto family is a highly scalable portfolio of 32-bit ARM® Cortex®-M0+/M4-based, AEC Q100-certified MCUs aimed for the automotive market. The family is optimized for cost-sensitive applications offering a low pin-count option with very low power consumption. With 2.7-5.5 V supply and focus on exceptional EMC/ESD robustness, Kinetis MCU auto series devices are well suited to a wide range of applications, ranging from body applications, infotainment connection modules, parking assistance, safety companion chips or generic sensor nodes. The automobile is already the 2nd largest generator of data for the Internet of Things (IoT). But what is the data used for and where is the data converted to information? Freescale and IBM are working together to make the automotive IoT real. IBM offers a messaging protocol, MQTT and Blue Mix cloud application development environment while Freescale offers a portfolio of automotive devices, including connectivity needed for the gateway. The presentation will focus on the applications, the connectivity and the challenges of big data in the automotive IoT.

This hands-on class will show what information is contained in sensor data and how to reduce the amount of recorded data dramatically without any major loss of targeted information. They will then compare data between dumb and intelligent data loggers, and understand the techniques used to compress the information.

PROFIBUS, CAN and RS232 are extensively used in communications networks in factories, buildings, transport infrastructures and monitoring/control equipment in our cities. Ethernet offers higher bandwidth and, in many cases, lowers cost--especially when deployed in daisy-chain topology. Technologies such as EtherCAT, PROFINET and EtherNet/IP are testament to this. In this session, we will explore how QorIQ processor families can help equipment manufacturers span this landscape using a QUICC Engine (QE) controller for UART/Ethernet-based protocol implementation, a Enhanced Triple Speed Ethernet Controller (eTSEC) for intelligent Ethernet classification and 2-port switching, and an eight-port gigabit Ethernet switch for wire-rate switching. Linux is the state of the art software used to enable Freescale LS102x platforms. Freescale provides a custom SDK and a set of networking software build on top of Linux kernel. In order to improve customer performance, it needs a way to analyze the existing performance of the software and find ways to improve it. CodeWarrior IDE is a development environment targeted to debug and analyze Freescale platforms. Software analysis component from CodeWarrior help Freescale developers to analyze the performance of their code running on Linux on LS102x targets. Using CodeWarrior analysis tools, you are able to trace your system execution at multiple levels: system level, kernel level, and user level. Using CodeWarrior analysis tools, developers are able to easy configure, collect and analyze the trace. Performance profilers are available to show the performance of the analyzed system.
