Best free alternative to Codewarrior for Coldfire?

I'm currently using Codewarrior Special Edition (v7.1a) to compile my CF Lite based projects.

The thing is... my project is constantly flirting with the 128kBytes code size limit of the Special Edition compiler. My next project which I'm about to start may even exceed that limit as it will contain a number of constant arrays.

I can't afford to buy a Codewarrior license. My projects are just a hobby and for personal use only. So a good, less limited alternative may become necessary.

Can anyone help me out?

Hello,

I think codeSourcery could be a good choice, you can get the lite edition here.

This post could be also interesting.

Hi Marc,

We also use the free CodeSourcery Lite to build on Linux, and it seems very reasonable.  I, of course, prefer CW. :smileyhappy:

I'm guessing you've already done this, but I also find I shrink my code size dramatically (we have a 64k limit, for other reasons) by selecting the following CW compilation options:

*no* A6 Stack Frames

yes Register Coloring

yes Instruction Scheduling

yes Peephole

And of course, "Optimize For: Smaller Code Size".

The A6 Stack Frames was surprising to me -- I thought it would have a huge impact on debuggability, but it did not.
