Xtal frequency, baud rate, in-circuit programming.

Going to use a HC08 of some description in a new project, and this will have an SMD and use in-circuit programming. I have never done one like this before and the problem is this: I will be using an 8 MHz xtal but for programming, according to the datasheet it needs a 9.8304 MHz xtal for the sake of the correct baud rate between the pc and board. Can I just use my 8 MHz xtal and somehow use a non-standard baud rate or is there some other way?

Hello JD,

For a new project, I would strongly suggest that you consider using one of the MC9S08 family, in lieu of a MC908 device, which have largely been superceded.

The purchase of a demo board for the selected device will provide programming and debug capability via a USB connection.  ICP can usually be achieved with the fitment of an additional header, and 6-way ribbon cable assembly, and the removal of the resident MCU from the demo board (usually socketed).

Other low cost programming/debug solutions are also available from third party sources.  Also refer to OSBDM forum.

So the demo board can connect and download to the project board? Okay...

That might be the simplest thing you have said to anybody all year, but you have no idea how much help that is to me
