General question: What does 'MPN' mean?

in different product change notifications I see the abbreviation 'MPN' when part numbers are mentioned. The 'PN' part of 'MPN' obviously could mean 'part number' but what does the 'M' mean?

Wikipedia suggests that it might mean Manufacturer Part Number

I don't know for sure, but perhaps this is old terminology that persists - "Motorola part number"
