Hello,

does anybody have any insider information about future development of 8-bit mcu from Freescale. The new 16-bit mcu (s12z) is a great success, can we also expect s08z mcu?

Best regards

Hi Florijan,

as i know Freescale doesn't have plan to develop new MCU based on 8bit core.

the replacement for 8bit mcu is Cotex M0+ core kinetis. see this url:

http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/homepage.jsp?nodeId=012FC898C9

can this help?

Have a great day,
Zhang Jun

The link you posted talks only about 32-bit ARM-based MCUs.  It even says so on the title.

So, I'm afraid your reply is a bit misleading.  Because if this is indeed the future of Freescale processors, then not only 8-bit MCUs are wiped out but also 16-bit ones plus whatever non-ARM based purely Motorola/Freescale architectures.  In effect, what you're saying is that Freescale will become just an ARM licensee and nothing more.  If this is so, it's certainly bad news for Freescale as one can get an ARM based MCU from lots of places.

I know you work for Freescale, but are you sure you have your facts straight?  (We've had misleading info in the past from Freescale employees, so I'm just double checking.  Anyone else from Freescale to support this claim?)

Hi, Tony,

Because of limited resource, the MCU team in  Freescale is focusing on Kinetis family development, we have not plan to develop new mcu based on 8 bits MCU core and there is not roadmap for 8 bits core at the time being. Regarding the future of 8 bits core, it is dependent on market requirement, resource, decision maker... to determine  if we still develop new mcu based on 8 bits core.

hi Tony,

Freescale will still keep maintenance of existing 8-bit MCUs, they will not be wiped out in near future. for existing 8-bit MCUs users, they can use it as they want.

however for new user we recommend Cotex M0+ core. it has similar price as 8bit MCU, but it is 32bit and it can be faster speed, low power, why not choose M0+?

Have a great day,
