I installed the new version V5.2 on the machine I have a license for.
By changing the license.dat file between the one delivered with the download and my license file, I cannot see any difference in behaviour.
is there a way to find out whether or not the license.dat works?

Hi,
yes you can check it in a project properties.
1) open a project
2) go to project properties
3) open e.g. Compiler for HC12 - About Dialog
find the compiler feature HI100300 in the text:
If the license is present you should see something like this:
HI100300 (metrowks, 5.000): HC12 Compiler ANSI-C (Single User License, DISK: xxxxxxxx, registered, cached)
if there is no compiler license:
HI100300 (metrowks, 5.000): HC12 Compiler ANSI-C (HC12, checkout failed, demo mode: 1024 bytes of C++ code, HC12, checkout failed, demo mode: 65536 bytes of C code, HC12, checkout failed, demo mode: 1024 bytes of code, running in demo mode(-1), UNREGISTERED)
Hope it helps.
