iMX6DL SABRE platform android apk file install

I'm trying to install an app written by TI in the form of an apk file onto my iMX6DL SABRE platform, but the tablet isn't recognizing the apk file as an app.  Does anyone know how to make this work?

Are you using the ADB to load the apk?
Did you make sure that the drivers that the apk uses are already installed?

I previously installed the apk file on my android phone via file transfer.  I tried the same method with SABRE but that was unsuccessful.  I'm new to android.  How can I access the ADB?
