Mfg U-Boot for iMX6

I've seen a few places on the forums that state that

" in the newest BSP the mfgtool can use the same u-boot with the normal u-boot."

This post suggests that "newest BSP" means L4 and higher.

However other posts suggest L3. Can this be clarified?

I am using Android N7.1.2 for iMX6  (U-Boot is u-boot-2017.03, kernel is 4.9.17). What version of BSP does this include, it's not clear from the documentation.

Attached is the release notes. according to Table 2, the kernel is based on Linux BSP L4.9.11 GA release.
