FlexCAN ESR IDLE bit?

Does anyone know if the IDLE bit in the imx536 FlexCAN is functional?

We would like to use it to detect a disconnected cable, but IDLE (ESR bit 7) is always 1.  We have never seen it be anything else.

Any ideas?
