Internal voltage reference for internal temp sensor

We want to rely on the internal voltage reference when reading the temperature sensor.

VREFH and VREFL are exposed through external pins – but these are intended for an external, high precision voltage reference.Are these connected continuously or do we have to explicitly connect them using an internal register setting?
