How do bound groups work and what is their purpose?

I am looking at improving the speed of my zigbee group control. I was reading through the documentation JN-UG-3101 (ZigBee PRO Stack User Guide) and I found the function ZPS_eAplZdoBindGroup. 
After you have bound a group, do you control it using E_ZCL_AM_BOUND or E_ZCL_AM_GROUP group address mode.
What is the function of binding a group?

Could you please check the JN-UG-3077? I believe that chapter 34 section 34.1.1 Addressing Modes (eZCL_AddressMode) will be quite helpful for you.
