The M-Series of devices by Freescale is dubbed Kinetis.  Kinetis Low Power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M MCUs|Freescale

For educational purposes the Freedom boards are cheap  and very well supported.  I personally recommend the FRDM-KL25Z [$13] (Cortex- M0+) or FRDM-K64F [$35] (M4).

Perhaps prof1982 is watching this thread and can comment.  I think it might be based on ARM M-series though.

Here is a list of textbooks that ARM maintains: ARM Related Books - ARM   I have heard good things about William Hohls ARM assembly books.

Thanks for your insight. I have an iMX35 system on my desk right now - it might be overkill for an introductory course (I'm just learning ARM myself after teaching x86 hardware and assembly programming using Mazidi's "The X86 PC"). I was hoping to pick off some I/O pins but don't see many. Perhaps another (cheaper) ARM system would be better for the students?? What is the significance of your "Mazidi=just ARM M-series" comment?

Excellent - i've ordered the FRDM-KL46Z (no 25Z's to be had anywhere). I think the students (and I) will get a kick out of the touch slider. Thanks,  John M., for the help.
