Hi, I'm currently working on a project for Capacitive Touch-sensor behind a 0.3 mm Steel Cover.

I was wondering if anybody has experience with such a project.

Is the PCF 8883 suitable for doing the job ?

Hi Jan,

It should work properly, just an additional recommendation would be to avoid air gaps between the sensing plate and the dielectric (steel cover), in fact, if the sensing plate and the steel cover are touching this will increase the sensing area which means that the sensitivity would increase.

Here are some application notes that could be useful for this application:

AN10832 “PCF8883 and PCA8886 - capacitive proximity switch with auto-calibration” http://cache.nxp.com/documents/application_note/AN10832.pdf

AN11155 “General design guidelines for the NXP capacitive sensors” http://cache.nxp.com/documents/application_note/AN11155.pdf

Have a great day,
Jose
