I try to boot the device from sd card. 

I created two partitions and dd the u-boot to the first then I have bitbaked kernel-fsl-ls1046a-rdb.itb which I copied to the SD card as kernel.itb along with rootfs. When I try to boot ls1046ardb the card says:

What have I done wrong

SDK is broken. I have wasted several days doing something that I should not have to do.

bitbake fsl-** produces rootfs which is no operational. I finally got it working. Stock kernel with noinitrd. Tar your bitbake image to SD card and overwrite that with stock fsl-minimum-image. I think I would have something better to do than figure out something like that. I was payed for doing unnecessary work. Please make one .iso. It is tedious to install SDK three time just to get support for one prosessor. Documentation is from, I don't have to say. Thanks anyway. Waiting for upgrade that bitbake image would just work.

Please clarify your intention because "sf" U-Boot commands are for SPI Flash.

The SD card is handled by "mmc" U-Boot commands.

Following instructions from AN5340.pdf chapter 5.3 Program kernel itb to SD card. Except there were no kernel.itb available so I used kernel-fsl-ls1046a-rdb-<nnn>.itb and renamed it to kernel.itb

The "bootcmd" shows that SPI Flash booting will be executed.

Ok, I got it booting. I totally missed the link at thte first mail. That said. It still won't boot kernel.

It hangs after following messages:

....

Bad inittab entry at line 5
can't open /dev/si: No such file or directory
can't open /dev/~~: No such file or directory
can't open /dev/l0: No such file or directory
can't open /dev/l1: No such file or director

...

I looked a thread "

SDK 2.0 inittab entries not found booting from /dev/mmcblk0p2"

on subject but nothing on that would worked.

This is due to the kernel.itb initrd interfering with the init sequence.

The fix is to not use the initrd when booting a real rootfs (when root=/dev/mmcblk0p1 or nfs or sda1 ...).

This an be accomplished in two ways:

  1. by adding the "noinitrd" option to bootargs, or
  2. not passing the ramdisk to Linux by using a different bootm syntax: "bootm $kernel_load:kernel@1 - $kernel_load:fdt@1"
