Hello NXP,

I am working on adding a SJA1105Q Ethernet switch to Renesas SOC. kernel crash has been observed after loading the sja1105.ko file into the kerne. steps and kernel crash logs are shown below.

  1. Added the dependent modules first.
    1. dsa_core.ko
    2. ptp.ko
    3. tag_8021q.ko
  2. Load sja1105q.ko module and check the dmesg logs for faults.
  3. Kernel crash has been observed

Hi Jayasankar,

Thanks for your message and sorry for the delay.
Unfortunately, I see multiple things are wrong, let me try to list them:

1. port@0 -> phy-handle = <&phy0> (dummy_phy): please remove that.
No such thing as dummy phy, and worse, it is invalid to have both a phy-handle and a fixed-link for an ethernet port. So either one or the other.

2. sja1105,role-phy: can be removed (doesn't affect functionality)

3. compatible = "microchip,ksz9031":
Ethernet PHYs, if they have a compatible string at all, should have it in the "ethernet-phy-idXXXX.XXXX" form, which is all that is recognized by of_mdiobus_child_is_phy() as a phy_device. If it's not recognized as a phy_device, it will just be a raw mdio_device

4. same comment for compatible = "marvell,mv88q2112"

5. To get more information about where it hangs progress can be made by disassembling the kernel object file and seeing what is at the line where it crashes.

The technique would be:

  • From the console where the kernel is built (and using the same toolchain that was used to build the running kernel), run: "make drivers/net/dsa/sja1105/sja1105_main.lst"
  • This creates the listing file which intertwines the disassembly with the C code
  • Open that file, find the offset of the sja1105_probe() function
  • Show us what code is around that offset of sja1105_probe() + 0x130 byte

Best regards,

Sabeur

Hello Sabeur,

Thanks for the information. Infact I realizsed and changed the device tree nodes. But still issue in connecting/attaching (of_phy_attach) PHY device node in of_mdio.c file.

Updated DTS file is,

&msiof3 {
	pinctrl-0 = <&msiof3_pins>;
	pinctrl-names = "default";
	status = "okay";
	cs-gpios = <0>, <&gpio1 5 GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW>;

In order to first test the PHY device, I just enabled only one switch port. I just commented the compatible property for mii_eth_phy3 PHY.

Now I am debugging the reason for issue number 4. Do you have any points to share.

Hi,

Thanks for the logs however, the kernel log does not coincide with the device tree.

Example:

the comment at https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/latest/source/drivers/net/mdio/of_mdio.c#L216 says it pretty clearly why these messages get printed:

[    0.724622] mdio_bus e6800000.ethernet-ffffffff: scan phy fixed-link at address 8
[    0.733461] mdio_bus e6800000.ethernet-ffffffff: scan phy mdio at add

: because the device tree nodes for the PHYs have no "reg" value defined (which is supposed to mean the PHY address on the MDIO bus) but your device tree, stripped of commented lines, looks like this:

mdio{
        #address-cells = <1>;
        #size-cells = <0>;

        mii_eth_phy3: ksz9031@0 {
            reg = <0>;
            interrupt-parent = <&gpio4>;
            interrupts = <17 IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_LOW>;
        };
    };

Can you please share the kernel log that coincides with that ?

Thanks, Sabeur

Hi Sabeur,

It is same. I even removed the commented part in device tree and checked it.

Hi,

Are you botting the device tree that you are modifying ?

Regarding the error in point #4: error -19 is ENODEV, it means that one of the externally-facing sja1105 ports failed to connect to its phy-handle which means that the phy behind the phy-handle did not get probed so probably because of bad PHY address.

The PHY scanning is a symptom of a lack of a "reg" property in the device tree that needs to be debugged and gotten rid of.

Sabeur

Hello Sabeur,

Could you please tell me which kernel modules required to me selected for the connection diagram attached here with.

Thanks and Regards,

Jay

Hi,

Unfortunately it is not specific to be able to help however, I can suggest a method:

search for all compatible strings from the device tree in the "drivers/" folder, see where the driver lives, open the Makefile for that driver, and enable the Kconfig option that controls the compilation of that file.

Sabeur

hello NXP team,

I had tried to make eth2 visible in linux kernel which is the net device for Ethavb.

When I insert the sja1105t driver using insmod command, the error is,

[  178.569787] sja1105 spi3.1: calling sja1105_probe...
[  178.598128] sja1105 spi3.1: Probed switch chip: SJA1105T
[ 178.602988] Tree has no master device
[  178.603041] sja1105: probe of spi3.1 failed with error -22

What could be wrong in here ? any guesses ?
