S32K358EVB-Q289: Blinking LED Example Not Working (MATLAB R2022b / MBDT 1.6.0)

Hello,

I’m trying to run a simple GPIO (LED ON/OFF) test on S32K358EVB-Q289 using MATLAB/Simulink, but the NXP “Blinking LED” example does not work on my board.

Environment

• MATLAB: R2022b

• Board: S32K3X8EVB-Q289HWUM (S32K358EVB-Q289)

• Support package/toolbox: SW32_MBDT_S32K3_1.6.0_D2501.mltbx (license 1.6.0)

Problem
I want to study the GPIO LED blink example provided by NXP. However, MATLAB/Simulink does not provide a target/example specifically for S32K358-Q289.

Steps / symptoms:

1. Open the NXP provided Blinking LED example model in Simulink.

2. Press Ctrl+E (Configuration Parameters) and check the hardware settings.

3. S32K358EVB-Q289 is not available in the hardware board list.

4. As a workaround, I changed Configuration Project Template to S32K358EVB-Q289 (switch package) (see attached screenshot).

5. In S32 Config Tool, I configured:

   • Pins: LED-related pin settings

   • Peripherals: LED/GPIO related settings

6. The project builds successfully, but the LED does not toggle on the real board (no blinking).

So the build is OK, but the LED ON/OFF does not work on hardware.

Questions

1. Is there an official MATLAB/Simulink example project for S32K358-Q289 (S32K358EVB-Q289)? If yes, where can I download/access it?

2. How should the “Blinking LED” example be adapted to work on S32K358EVB-Q289? Are there required settings (pin mux, clock/init, board init, etc.) that I might be missing?

3. About the license/toolbox versions: I can find the license/download up to 1.6.0, but I don’t see a license download section for 1.8.0. Is 1.8.0 not available yet, or is it provided in a different place?

Thank you for your interest into Model-Based Design Toolbox for S32K3, for the detailed description of your setup and for outlining the steps you followed. Below are a few clarifications regarding your questions:

1. Unfortunately, at this time, there is no official MATLAB/Simulink example specifically targeting the S32K358-Q289 board.

You can find support for S32K358-Q172 (with a different pinout).

The S32K358‑Q289 package is not yet included in the supported device list, which is why you do not see a dedicated example or hardware board entry for it.

2. Using the S32K358‑Q172 package and attempting to manually adjust the pins may lead to the behavior you observed, primarily due to the pinout differences between the 172‑pin and 289‑pin variants. While some pins may align and allow partial compatibility, there will inevitably be mismatches that can cause functional issues.

Moreover, we will take into consideration adding support for the S32K358‑Q289 in future releases.

3. The latest release, MBDT for S32K3 version 1.8.0, the toolbox no longer requires a license file. You can download and use version 1.8.0 directly without activating any license.

This is why you no longer see a license download section for 1.8.0—licensing is no longer part of the installation process.
