Hello,

Could you please tell me how to setup the lpc1768xpresso to use the USB Virtual Serial Port" and to enable lpc1768xpresso to communicate over the same USB cable that is used for programming.

The mbed has a nice tut here http://mbed.org/handbook/Windows-serial-configuration

But no drivers have been made for xpresso like they have for mbed http://mbed.org/media/downloads/drivers/mbedWinSerial_16466.exe 

well I can't find anything,

You obviously don't understand this business.
1. The xbox is produced in HUGE volumes. This has a significant impact on price
2. the xbox is sold at a loss to Microsoft. They can afford to do this because they take a percentage of every game sold. This is the same model used in printers (and razors/razorblades) and is, for example, why manufacturers ink is so expensive - to subsidize the hardware costs.

In that world, you make your money from ''accessory" sales (games, ink, cell phone subscriptions, razors) and can thus afford to subsidize the original cost of the hardware.

3. I am not connected to EA, so don't know the costs, but looking at what it costs us to develop a board that sells in relatively same numbers (low hundreds), I am amazed that they can produce the board as cheaply as they do, when you also have to account for development costs, stocking, returns, etc etc. In the real (unsubsidized) world, the pricing model is very different to the subsidized world. They reflect the REAL cost.

I suggest you try to develop a board that will sell in relatively small volumes, and then work out how much you can sell it for, and make a living. I think you are in for a shock. I see you live in Space - welcome to planet earth.

you can't be serious they cost 0.50$ to make if that, and they pay people like 0.01$ to make them in Taiwan, everything in this market is a complete sham and I am not just talking about EA I am talking about every company. Most of the time if any company is offering anything for cheap it's a serious health hazard and you can kiss good bye to the integrity of your components as they gradually get worn down from ESD.

Don't give me this crap about the price, this stuff it's everywhere you take a look at the xbox360, how much does it cost to make jeeeeeeeeeeeeeezeeee.

Why sell a micro controller and then a base board that is double the price... 50 dollars would have been fair but god dam 100 dollars plus no way.

You can take your money system and stick it where the sun don't shine:)

I also heard from some reverse engineers that, it was basically coded in way as to stop people from developing anything, if them claims are true who knows:)

Oh and what a great Language C is right LOL!!!

I have to say tho nxp, Mbed and the online support and community is great for learning tho, just a shame it gets ruin by the overpricing of the baseboard.

Wow ... do you have a link to the 50€ assembled, tested and proven electronic devices you're profitably making with a BOM cost comparable to those EA boards. I can't see how EA is making a profit at it myself, certainly nothing near the 50% markup you're implying. My guess is they're just breaking even, and that's with NXP subsidising the MCUs on the various bords. I buy a lot of EA boards just for the SW samples, which are already a pretty amazing deal at 250€ or so for their typical development boards, usually saving me weeks of development effort. At 100€ the base board is a no brainer to me, but (apparently) we don't see things the same way.

If you want quality tools with excellent support, it's going to cost something. Anyone with any meaningful experience in assembly should be able to see that EA must be cutting things razor thin already unless the development work is also being financed by NXP, etc.

You want people to spoon feed things for free, but you don't find it fair that those same people also should earn a salary doing your work for you? :confused:

On the scale of things, I don't think that Embedded Artist's charging 89 euros is extortionate. I know of at least one other alternative baseboard on the market, though I have no hands-on experience of this one...

But the whole point of LPCXpresso is that you can add on hardware yourself. At the simplest level, and I've not tried this myself,  NXP's LPCXpresso Getting Started Guide,  section 7.3, suggests a cheap and cheerful way of connecting via USB to  the MCU part of the board - by snipping the end off-a-usb-cable.

This might not be as the "out of the box" means of getting a virtual  serial port that you get with mbed, but there again mbed doesn't give  you any real debug capabilities.

You might also want to take a look at the semihosting mechanism that the IDE provides, which is used by several of the examples, such as the "consoleprint" one. More information on this can be found at:

The first things is that you cannot use the USB port connected to the LPC-Link - this can only be used for debugging/flash programming the target chip via LPC-Link. It is not even connected to the LPC1768 on the target board. You will need to attach your own USB connector to your target board to be able to use the USB peripheral on the LPC1768.

The example that you are looking for is contained in the RDB1768_CMSIS examples. Although these examples are for the Code Red LPC1768 Development board, many of them will work 'out of the box' on the LPCXpresso LPC1768 board, once suitable ports/connectors have been added the LPCXpresso board. Those that don't work out of the box, are very easily ported as they likely use a different combination of GPIO ports.

An alternative to adding your own connectors/ports to the LPCXpresso board is to purchase the Embedded Artists baseboard. There are also examples available specifically for this baseboard.
