adding assembler files?

Does the entry-level NXP focussed product LPCXpresso IDE (available through the cheep NXP LPCXpresso boards) support adding pure assembler files to a C project (and compiling to asm)?
I'm referring to *.S file - I do not want to use inline assembler!
Does the IDE use GNU AS?
