Waiting for UART Receive(lpc1769)

I am trying to run a program with the UART_Receive function and other GPIO outputs. The UART_Receive function causes the program to hang until a character is receive.Can anyone offer any solutions? Thanks :)

The code would not wait / hang if you use UART receive interrupt. :)
