Trouble booting LPC LINK-2

I am unable to boot LPC-LINK 2. The program hangs at the start "Initializing RedLink Server with ....". I have no jumpers set on the board, and I have tried switching USB ports. I have an older LINK board, broken apart from a LPCXPRESSO board that works fine, but I have bought a number of the LINK 2's for customers, and it would be nice to get them going. I am running Windows 7 Pro. I have included a snap of where the program hangs, and the available error message.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

I booted in Safe Mode, with very few background processes running, that didn't help.
I also prevented all but MS processes from starting-up in normal mode, unfortunately that didn't help.

On the positive side, I tried it on a Windows 8 notebook, one that I don't normally use for development, and it started no problem!
I have not the best, but at least some kind of work-around.

As a side note, I also purchased a new USB card, since many people on the net with the same problem found that helped, but not in this case.

I have had a quick scan of the applications running on your system and the following apps may be worth disabling (one at a time) to see if it is one of those that is preventing LPC-Link2 from booting:

HotKeyUtility
mcu2cam
NeatStartupService
iPoint
NVidia drivers

But there are lots of others, and the above list is only my guess.

As I said, and based on too many years of investigating these sorts of problems, I am 99% certain that ONE of your 3rd party applications is causing the problem. If nothing else, you may want to boot into Safe mode and then run the boot_link2 script to confirm my suspicions.

Thank you for your considered opinion on a sample size of two computers. We have 10's of thousands of users of lpc-link2 with a very tiny number of problems, nearly all of which are caused by problems on the users computer.

As I said, I am almost certain that your problem is due to an application you are running. The diagnostics you have run have proved that we are unable to open the device, and this can only be because something else has it opened.

If you run the same usbdiag command on your second computer and post the results, I will compare which applications are running and may be able to highlight possible problem applications. However, you will probably able to do this more quickly yourself.

I tried the LINK-2 in a second computer, a notebook that I also use for development, and that in no way resembles my main desktop computer, and it does the exact same thing, which pretty well throws the "it's your computer's fault" explanation out the window: this can only be a software bug or shortcoming on the LPC side, in my humble opinion. Open wide garbage can, here come half a dozen LPC-LINK2 cards -- still in package :)

That said, does anyone know where I can get some more RED PROBE+ adapters? They had a tendency to fail after a few months use, but until then they worked great.

Almost certainly, one of your applications that is 'grabbing' LPC-LINK2 and preventing us from booting it. The is the cause of the 'cannot open device' message. We have had similar problems with 3rd party applications in the past.

You will have to experiment to find out which application, but the likely culprits are
- any mouse extender or keyboard extender applications
- video drivers (nvidia are notorious for this)
- an application that boots firmware when connecting a USB device. I have seen Bluetooth and some network cards do this

I'm sorry, but I can't offer much more help, but I am 99% certain that this is the cause of your problem.

I have gone through the FAQ, and up to the point where the LINK2 boots everything is correct, and I have rebooted my computer to remove any left-over drivers, and tried in each USB port. The only thing I see as suspicious is that the LPC driver is dated 2009, is there a newer one, and if so, how can I load it?

Also, I've tried booting from the command line, as per the FAQ, and I receive the following message:

Yes, read the FAQ and report any differences. I would also strongly suggest that you try different USB ports and see if this changes the behaviour.

Does it hang? Or does it return an error after a timeout (currently 30 seconds)?

When LPC-Link2 is booted, Windows will install additional drivers (that were installed by the LPCXpresso installer). It can take Windows many seconds to install these drivers the first time (I have seen 20-30 seconds, but this depends on the speed of your computer, and so could be longer).
